Healing Trauma: A Journey to Rebalance Your Mind, Body, and Spirit
I don’t expect you to take everything I say at face value. You might be sceptical about whether you can change your biochemistry, rewire neural pathways, or shift deeply ingrained thought patterns—and that’s completely okay. You have free will, and I encourage you to explore both sides of the coin before you make any decisions about your healing journey.
Trauma leaves an imprint on every part of us—our mind, body, and spirit. It’s not just something that lives in our thoughts or emotions, but something that deeply affects how our entire system functions. I’ve always had a fascination with systems—how every part is interconnected, and how changing just one element can transform the whole. My background as a systems analyst and programmer has given me a unique perspective on trauma, which I carry into my work as a therapist. When trauma impacts one part of us, it sends ripples through everything else—our hormonal balance, our brain’s wiring, and the way our body responds to stress. But here’s the good news: healing one part can help restore balance to the whole system.
Trauma has a profound effect on our hormonal system. When we experience trauma, our body floods with stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline to help us survive. These hormones are essential in the moment of danger, but when trauma isn’t resolved, they continue to be released, keeping our bodies stuck in survival mode. Over time, this can lead to chronic anxiety, fatigue, autoimmune disorders, and more. Our body wasn’t designed to stay in this heightened state forever.
That’s why it’s so important to work on calming the nervous system and helping the body find its balance again. Through my work with Internal Family Systems (IFS) and The Advancing Heart Protocol®, we can begin to shift your system out of that constant state of alert. IFS helps us connect with the protective parts of you that have been triggered by trauma—parts that keep you stuck in survival mode. The Advancing Heart Protocol® brings in a holistic approach, rooted in science, to help your body recalibrate and reduce the chronic release of stress hormones. Healing is a journey, and while it takes time, the transformation can be profound as your body begins to regain its natural balance.
Trauma also rewires the brain, affecting key areas responsible for memory, emotional regulation, and rational thinking. The amygdala, which governs fear and survival instincts, becomes hyperactive, while the hippocampus, responsible for memory, and the prefrontal cortex, which handles decision-making, are disrupted. This leaves the brain constantly on high alert, unable to relax or process emotions in a healthy way. But just as trauma can rewire the brain in harmful ways, healing can rewire it for growth and resilience.
One of the things that I love about the brain is its capacity for neuroplasticity—its ability to form new connections and change how it functions. IFS and The Advancing Heart Protocol® allow us to create the space for these new connections to form. By working with the parts of you that have been holding onto trauma, we begin to rewire the brain so that you can experience life with more calm, clarity, and emotional balance. It’s about gently guiding your brain out of survival mode and helping it return to a state where you can feel safe and grounded.
But trauma doesn’t just affect the mind—it lives in the body too. After trauma, our body holds onto tension, pain, and imbalance. The fight-or-flight response, governed by the sympathetic nervous system, stays overactive, creating chronic stress and physical symptoms. The parasympathetic nervous system, our social engagement system, struggles to take over, leaving the body in a constant state of readiness for danger. This can lead to chronic pain, fatigue, digestive issues, and even illness.
In my practice, I focus on helping the body release this stored trauma through Polyvagal Theory and an understanding of the social engagement system. Polyvagal Theory explains how our nervous system regulates safety and connection with others. Trauma often disrupts the social engagement system, making it difficult to connect, trust, or feel safe in relationships. By working with the body and nervous system, we help restore a sense of safety, enabling you to reconnect with others and relate in healthy, trusting ways.
The body is incredibly intelligent—it stores trauma just as much as the mind does.Â
"Healing trauma is not just about resolving emotional pain. It’s about helping your body, brain, and hormonal system work together in harmony".
This journey isn’t a quick fix, and it takes time. But as someone who has walked this path personally and professionally, I can tell you that the rewards are life-changing. When you begin to heal from trauma, your life opens up in ways you never thought possible. You move from surviving to truly thriving. And that’s where the magic happens. Let’s take The Journey Home® together.
